The Pepperjack difference

Aisle order: your categories versus the store's shelf data

AnyList groups items into categories (Produce, Dairy, and so on) and lets you set a different category order for each store you shop at. That is a good system, and it is the same category grouping Pepperjack Base includes at any store. The difference is what happens at a supported store. Pepperjack Plus looks each item up at your specific Walmart, H-E-B, Kroger, or Meijer location and tags it with the aisle it is actually stocked in, so "coffee" becomes "Aisle 12" without you arranging anything.

That lookup is only as good as the store's data, and it only exists at supported locations in the four chains. Everywhere else, both apps are doing the same thing: sorting by a category order you control.

Prices: typed in versus predicted

AnyList Complete lets you record prices on items and track them over time. It is a price book you maintain. Pepperjack Plus fills prices in for you at supported stores, using the same shelf data, and totals the list before you leave the house. The trade-off is that a predicted price is an estimate: brands, sizes, and in-store markdowns can move the final bill, so Pepperjack labels it as planning information rather than a receipt.

Platforms and recipes

This is where AnyList is simply ahead. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Android, and the web, and it imports recipes from any site into a meal plan that generates the list. Pepperjack runs on iPhone only, requires iOS 18, and has no recipe or meal-planning features. A household with an Android phone in it cannot share a Pepperjack list today.

What each plan covers

AnyList's free plan covers lists, sharing, and categories; Complete ($9.99 a year for one person, $14.99 for a household) adds recipe import, meal planning, item photos, price tracking, and Apple Watch. Pepperjack Base ($2.99 a month or $29.99 a year) includes unlimited lists, unlimited people, item photos, recurring items, and widgets, with no ads. Eligible Base subscribers get a 14-day trial. Plus adds aisles and prices; App Store Plus purchases support Apple Family Sharing.

You’ll love Pepperjack if

  • You shop at Walmart, H-E-B, Kroger, or Meijer and want each item tagged with its aisle at your store.
  • You want a predicted total before you shop, without typing prices in yourself.
  • Your staples should come back on the list on their own, every trip or every month.
  • You want to photograph the handwritten list on the fridge and have it typed for you.
  • Everyone in the household is on iPhone and you would rather sign in with Apple or a phone number than manage another password.

When to consider AnyList

  • Anyone in the household uses Android, or you want the list on a Mac or in a browser.
  • You plan meals from recipes and want the list generated from them.
  • You need Alexa or Siri to add items by voice.
  • You want the cheapest paid tier with the most features: Complete is $14.99 a year for a household.
