Pepperjack vs Apple Reminders for Grocery Lists

Give your groceries a dedicated home with Pepperjack. Shared lists, recurring staples, and photo-to-list entry help your household get ready; Plus adds predicted aisles, prices, and Live Activity shopping progress. Apple Reminders handles general tasks and grocery categories. Pepperjack is built around the whole grocery run. Supported-store predictions require Plus at participating Walmart, H-E-B, Kroger, and Meijer locations in the US; coverage varies and prices are estimates.

The Pepperjack difference

Categories versus aisles

Reminders' Groceries lists automatically sort items into categories (Produce, Breads & Cereals, Frozen Foods, Snacks & Candy, Meat, Dairy, Eggs & Cheese, Bakery, Baking Items, Household Items, Personal Care & Health, Wine, Beer & Spirits), and you can add your own sections and reorder them. That is the same category grouping Pepperjack Base includes. Pepperjack Plus then looks each item up at your specific supported store and shows the aisle it is in, sorted into store order. Reminders has no store data at all.

Sharing built for a household

Reminders shares a list through iCloud, and it works. Pepperjack is designed around the shared list as the product: an invite link, everyone's adds and check-offs appearing on every phone as they happen, a shopping trip that shows the household who is in the store and what is left, and trip history afterwards. Both require everyone to be on iPhone.

What Reminders cannot do

Reminders has no prices, no recurring grocery items (a repeating reminder repeats by date, not by shopping trip), no reading a list from a photo, and no Live Activity for a trip in progress. Pepperjack has all four; recurring items and photo capture are included in Base and Plus, while the Live Activity, aisles, and prices are part of Plus, with aisles and prices limited to supported US stores.

What Pepperjack cannot do

Reminders is free, has no upsell, runs on iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch as well as iPhone, takes items from Siri, and is not going anywhere. Pepperjack is a separate download, iPhone-only, needs iOS 18, and charges for aisles and prices. New list owners need Base or Plus; both include unlimited lists with unlimited people.

You’ll love Pepperjack if

  • You shop at a supported Walmart, H-E-B, Kroger, or Meijer and want aisle numbers and a predicted total.
  • Your staples should re-add themselves every trip or every month.
  • You want to photograph the paper list and have it typed for you.
  • You want the Lock Screen to show what is left while you shop (Plus), and a record of the trip afterwards.
  • You want a list built around the household rather than a to-do app that happens to share.

When to consider Apple Reminders

  • You want zero setup and zero cost, with no separate app.
  • You use iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch for the list.
  • You add most items by asking Siri.
  • You do not shop at Walmart, H-E-B, Kroger, or Meijer and category sorting is all you need.

Questions people ask

Does Apple Reminders sort groceries by aisle?
It sorts into categories such as Produce, Dairy, and Frozen Foods on Groceries-type lists (iOS 17 and later). It does not know aisle numbers for any store. Pepperjack Plus shows the aisle at supported Walmart, H-E-B, Kroger, and Meijer locations.
Is Pepperjack better than Reminders for a shared family list?
It is built for it: invite links, real-time check-offs, a shared shopping trip, trip history, and recurring items. Reminders shares fine over iCloud but is a to-do app first. If Reminders is working for you, there is no reason to switch until you want aisles, prices, or recurring items.
Is Pepperjack free?
New list owners need Base ($2.99 a month or $29.99 a year) or Plus. Eligible Base subscribers get a 14-day trial. Both plans include unlimited shared lists without ads; Plus adds aisle numbers and price estimates. Invited members are covered by the owner’s active plan or grandfathered access.
Can I import my Reminders grocery list?
Not directly. Screenshot the list and use Pepperjack's add-from-photo, which reads the items in.
Do both need everyone on iPhone?
Yes. Reminders needs an Apple device and an iCloud account; Pepperjack needs an iPhone on iOS 18 or later. Neither works for an Android member of the household.
